The Permanent Missions to the United Nations in New York and Geneva of CTI’s six Core States discussed the global situation on torture prevention and response during an online discussion with the four UN anti-torture mandate holders and bodies.
Hosted by the Permanent Mission of Denmark in New York and moderated by the CTI Secretariat, this informal meeting heard briefings from Dr. Jens Modvig, Chairperson of the Committee against Torture; Professor Sir Malcolm Evans, Chairperson of the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture; Professor Nils Melzer, Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment; and Dr. Vivienne Nathanson, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture. Representatives of all six CTI Core States (Chile, Denmark, Fiji, Ghana, Indonesia and Morocco) attended, as well as staff of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Held ahead of the joint interactive dialogue between the anti-torture mandate holders and UN Member States within the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee, taking place today in New York, the meeting was an opportunity to explore new opportunities for cooperation between CTI and the UN anti-torture mandate holders, with a view to advancing collective efforts to prevent and respond to torture and ill-treatment worldwide.
