CTI’s UNCAT Ratification Toolkit now updated

CTI UNCAT Ratification Toolkit

The Convention against Torture Initiative (CTI) today launches the updated version of its Ratification Toolkit on the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (UNCAT). The Toolkit, with a new easy-to-read design, offers executive decision-makers critical information to help prepare to ratify the treaty.

CTI’s UNCAT Ratification Toolkit explains the main obligations of the treaty, outlines some of the key benefits of ratifying it, and the technical procedures of ratification.

The updated version includes the latest figures and statistics, new infographics depicting the reasons to become party to UNCAT, and a chart setting out the procedural steps of ratification/accession. It further contains a detailed checklist of the elements needed for reviewing existing legislative provisions with the view to helping States evaluate their own laws for compatibility with the Convention and preparing the groundwork for implementing the Convention.

Several annexes provide briefings offering answers to the most common questions raised by States.

The full toolkit in English is available free of charge here.

It will soon also be available in Arabic, French and Portuguese.

CTI’s Advice Hub is also available to answer any queries on UNCAT and its ratification or accession process. Do not hesitate to contact us at advicehub@cti2024.org.
