CTI is pleased to announce that its 2017 Annual Report is now out. The report shares the range of CTI’s activities with governments and other stakeholders over the past year. Reaching universal ratification of the Convention against Torture is within reach, and there has been progress by many States on reducing the risks of torture and other abuses by improving the implementation of the Convention. This progress would not have been possible without the close cooperation and partnership of CTI’s Friends and partners, among them States, inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations as well as independent experts.

In summary, 2017 saw:

• 2 new UNCAT ratifications: Comoros and São Tomé and Príncipe
• 13 non-States-parties participated in CTI events and activities, from all regions
• 4 new States joined the Optional Protocol: Australia, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, State of Palestine
• 80 States participated in CTI regional events
• 2 major regional events were held in Santiago, Chile and Fes, Morocco
• First legislative drafting workshop on anti-torture laws held in Entebbe, Uganda with involvement of 10 African common law countries, as well as the Indian Law Commission
• Events were held at the UN in Geneva and New York, and at the OSCE in Vienna
• Diplomatic visits were conducted to the Caribbean and the Pacific
• New tools on practical issues were released
