CTI publishes its Annual Report for 2016
Geneva, 2 March 2017 – With the end of 2016, a busy and impactful year for the CTI came to a close. The Annual Report 2016 highlights progress made towards the CTI’s goals of universal ratification and improved implementation of the UN Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (UNCAT).
Highlights from 2016 include:
- Two new UNCAT ratifications: the Central African Republic and Fiji;
- The adoption of CTI’s Ratification and Implementation Strategy 2016-17;
- Summaries and outcomes from CTI’s major activities over the year, including global events held at the UN in Geneva and New York, at the OSCE in Vienna, as well as regional seminars and events held in Ghana, Denmark, Grenada, Saint Lucia, Suriname, and Fiji;
- The publication of a number of new tools, including a revised version of the UNCAT Ratification Tool, the APT-CTI Anti-torture Law Guide, a short film on rehabilitation for torture victims, and the beginning of the development of a series of practical Implementation Tools;
- The addition of five new UN Member States to the CTI Group of Friends alongside four NGOs and five international anti-torture experts.
